Pest Control Licence Information – New South Wales

Pest Management Licenses NSW

Based on the Pesticides Act of 1999 in New South Wales, individuals who wish to become pest management technicians and fumigators are required to subject themselves to a licensing procedure before being allowed to work in the pest industry.

Pest control in New South Wales is regulated under Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001 NSW. Commercial premises and domestic licenses are issued and no permit for the trainee is required. There is also no need for registration of Business.

Licence Options

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is responsible for issuing licenses for the pest control industry in New South Wales.

The three occupations requiring a licence under the Pesticides Act 1999 include aerial applicators, pest management technicians and fumigators.

The following include informationn for pesticide licensing for businesses and individuals.

Pest Management Technician licence

The Pesticides Act of 1999 made it possible to receive pest management technician licence which is mandatory for pest control. Pesticides which are permitted by this act are bactericides, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, baits, repellents, rodenticides, and veterinary chemicals.

Requirements for Pest Management Technician licence

  • Sufficient training is required to allow the person involved to protect not only himself but the people around him.
  • The applicant should be confident in demonstrating the suitable training he has achieved for gaining the respective licence

If you have any intentions of carrying out your business from a non-commercial or residential property, you are additionally required to contact your local government for their endorsement. When you submit your business application form to the department, an approval letter from your local government must be attached

It is also mandatory to clearly show your business registration number along with the name of your company on your vehicle. At the time you register for your business, a business registration number will be provided to you.

Fumigator licence

A fumigator licence is essential only when the following fumigants are present in the products:

  • Phosphine
  • Methyl bromide
  • Ethylene dichloride
  • Ethylene oxide (single dose canisters are allowed)
  • Hydrogen cyanide
  • Carbon disulphide.

Requirements for Fumigator licence

  • Have the age of 18 years or above.
  • Sufficient training is required to allow the person involved in fumigation to protect not only himself but the people around him.
  • The applicant should be confident in demonstrating the suitable training he has achieved for gaining the respective license.
  • Statement of qualifications or attainments must be attached from a registered training organisation or RTO.
  • Two good quality and clear passport size photographs must be attached to the application form.

 

Aerial Applicators licence

This licence is necessary for pilots and organisations that hire pilots to spray pesticides from the aircraft. A licence is essential for the aerial application of pesticide on a New South Wales property.

For agricultural operations, pesticides can only be sprayed from a plane that is approved by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. It is illegal to attach spray resources on any airplane not approved for agricultural functions.

License requirements.

  • The employer and pilot both must have Environmental Protection Authority license before using an airplane for spraying pesticides.
  • Aerial applicator pilot license should be acquired by the pilot.
  • The pilot must have an aerial applicator business license by himself or he should be an employee of the holder of aerial applicator business license.
